Step back in time with huge plank floors, fireplace and wood stove, old-timey quilts, and rockers on the wrap-around porch for enjoying the clear starry nights or views of the highest mountains east of the Rockies.
The 80-year old cottage is completely renovated with all new appliances, washer and dryer, full kitchen, and all linens (sleeps up to 8). There are 2 bedrooms: one with a double bed, single bed, and sleeping loft; the other with a queen size bed with views of the mountains on two sides. A queen size sofa bed is in the living room next to the fireplace. There is one large bathroom with a glass-brick walled shower. There are 2 cable TVs, a VCR, and a DVD player.
On the 2-acre lawn under big trees there is a volleyball/badminton net, horseshoes, a hammock, picnic table, swing, and chairs for just staring into space.
A trail from the cottage leads down through the woods and wild flowers to our pond, with Frog Branch continuing on to the river. At the pond there are benches, a rock fire ring, picnic tables, and a dock with a paddleboat at the deep end (13 ft.). The pond hosts many frogs and fireflies, and the dragonflies are so numerous we have them as a motif on the soaps.
The wild and scenic protected South Toe River is popular for fishing, swimming, and canoeing/kayaking; inner tubes for floating can be rented nearby. The valley is also very popular for hiking, waterfalls, and mountain-biking. Studios of glass-blowers, potters, and weavers are nearby plus many galleries in both Yancey and Mitchell Counties.
